Sports - Board & Ski
The board and surf ski events are two ‘craft’ surf lifeÂsavÂing events. These involve padÂdling a fibreÂglass board or ski from the beach, through the break and around a defined course and back to shore to cross the finÂish line. Up to sixÂteen comÂpetiÂtors or teams comÂpete in a sinÂgle heat, with sevÂeral heats, semi-finals and finals conÂducted durÂing a carÂniÂval.
There are many variÂaÂtions of board and ski events, includÂing male or female, mixed, sinÂgle or douÂble and a mulÂtiÂtude of relays, outÂlined below. You must be 16 years of age or older to comÂpete in ski events but you can be any age to comÂpete in board events.
Board Race
This is an indiÂvidÂual event where comÂpetiÂtors padÂdle a board around a course approxÂiÂmately 250m. DiviÂsions include Men and Women in Open, U19, U17, U15 and MasÂters categories.
Board Relay
This is a team event of three padÂdlers each comÂpletÂing the board course of approxÂiÂmately 250m. Each team memÂber in the first and secÂond legs of the relay tags the next perÂson in their team when returnÂing to the beach. The third team memÂber crosses the finÂish line. DiviÂsions include Men and Women in Open, U19, U17, U15 and MasÂters categories.
Board ResÂcue
Each team has two memÂbers – one swimÂmer and one board padÂdler. The swimÂmer or ‘patient’ swims to a buoy where they raise their hand to sigÂnal to their board padÂdler team mate to resÂcue them. When the board padÂdler reaches their swimÂmer the swimÂmer climbs onto the board and both comÂpetiÂtors padÂdle the board back to the beach. DiviÂsions include Men and Women in Open, U19, U17, U15 and MasÂters categories.
Ski Race
IndiÂvidÂual comÂpetiÂtors padÂdle a ski around a course of at least 300m from knee-deep water. DouÂble ski comÂpetiÂtors padÂdle approxÂiÂmately 50m furÂther. DiviÂsions for the sinÂgle and douÂble ski include Mens and WomÂens in Open, U19, U17 and MasÂters. The douÂble ski is also conÂducted as a mixed men and women event in the Open division.
Ski Relay
A team of three padÂdlers comÂplete the ski course of at least 300m each. The first and secÂond paddlers tag the next perÂson in their team on return to the beach with the third person crossÂing the finÂish line. DiviÂsions for the ski relay include Open, U19 and MasÂters. There is no douÂble ski relay.
